90s thrift/ charity shop haul

Hi everyone!

I have a new video out, which I’ll link down below. I’m hoping the audio is ok, as I had to use the audio from my camera in the end as I had issues with my microphone! It’s another haul but this one has a bit of a twist because it’s a haul of things I bought from charity shops (thrift shops are from what I’ve gathered are the American equivalent).

I’m hoping to do some vlogs soon so hopefully they will be of interest and make it so my channel isn’t purely haul videos (not that there’s anything wrong with that, ha, ha – I just don’t have the money to sustain it!).

At the moment I’m just trying to film as much as I can (and still write here!) because I’m hoping that will make me less nervous. Hopefully, I’m a little less nervous this time – Martin said I seemed like I was so that bodes well.

In the video I know I mention the price of one of the items but I don’t think I mention the rest. For reference I don’t remember the exact prices but everything was under £10! I think the first item I mention (I don’t want to give away any spoilers!) was around £6, the second around the same and I know the third was £7.

Let me know if there is any type of video you’d like to see me film – I’m hoping to film a vlog style follow me around video next week but we’ll see how that goes (ha, ha).

Also, another fun fact is that I did actually film me trying on the items for this haul but didn’t think it went with the main content of the video so I didn’t include the footage. The reason I’ve been filming try-on’s so far is because I love videos that show the item on someone as well. However, because our flat’s fairly small I do struggle to film them in our space.

Lazy Oaf Summer Sample Sale Haul: June 2018

After not being able to make it to the Winter Lazy Oaf sample sale I knew I had to make it to the summer one, especially as it landed for me luckily right near my birthday so I had a little bit of extra money to spend. This time was quite a bit different from my first experience.

First, of all there was a really nice camaraderie in the queue this time that made my heart warm (people were playing music, games and passing down cookies!) and I met some truly awesome ladies and the general experience was a lot more pleasant. There was a lot more stock this time and I think people further down in the queue stood more of a chance of coming away with things. There was also a 10 item limit, which might have helped. Prices were generally higher than last time though this might have been for me because I bought a lot of stuff from the GEM collection, which is generally more expensive. There was also a lot of one off exclusive pieces, which never went on sale. Inside also didn’t feel as crowded, last time I felt like I couldn’t breathe and there was just hands everywhere. This time when I went in I ran to the rail and started going for everything I wanted; I then realised I could actually breathe as no one else was at the rail!

So before I go I’ll start with the details of the queue. I got there about half past 3 in the morning and me and my long suffering boyfriend Martin were about 9 and 10th in the queue I think (or maybe 10th and 11th). The first 20 people in the queue I think got to go in first and effectively get first pick. The people at the start of the queue had been there since half past 2 in the morning. I personally could live with the wait but Dalston where the sample sale is held is not a safe place at that time in the morning. We were verbally harassed several times and had to call the police. I knew this issue has been reported to the brand before but it genuinely concerns me. Lazy Oaf fans tend to be young females and when some men see a long line of girls when they come out a club (drunk or a lot of the times high on hard drugs) they of course gravitate towards us. Luckily, nothing happened but I really think it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. Although, a lot of the incidents happened around 3-5am when people were getting out of the club; they didn’t end there and people kept coming up closer and closer to the time.

Also, we got there at half 3 because we decided to get the last train into London at half past midnight from where we live and then went to Polo Bar a 24 hour diner (highly recommend it was super yummy though I could only eat my burger because I’m not used to eating at that time!).

polo bar.jpg

The girls in front of and behind me in the queue were all super nice. Everyone genuinely wanted to help people get the pieces they wanted and I know a lot of people helped each other out, which is super sweet. I also want to say sorry if I was ever blunt at one point – my boyfriend said because I was so tired (we didn’t sleep at all – I had a small nap the day before) I didn’t realise that I was probably coming across more blunt than I meant! I’ve seen most of the girls in front of me’s hauls now and they’e also super cute – I’m so happy they got what they wanted!

So without further ado let’s get onto what I got. I had to put a few items down because I just couldn’t afford it and would rather they go to people who loved the item. One of which was the GEM Leopard print coat because although reduced at £110 that was still a lot more than I wanted to spend. I also had picked up another coat and couldn’t justice two coats! I also put down a Betty Boop puffy jacket that I don’t think was ever released, which had the same pattern as the denim jacket with a pink appliqué Betty Boop on the back. It was super cute but £80 and I don’t think it suited me! There was also lots of the berets and a few bags I wanted/ other dresses but I decided to focus on the pieces I’d been coveting and wanted to buy anyway as I knew I’d get the most wear out of them!

Accidentally but also predictably I ended up basically coming out with all black and pink items minus one purple bag (predictable because it’s a colour combination I’ve been really loving at the moment). I’m also very sad my Iron Fist shoes can’t be a part of this post, as they go with everything I bought but unfortunately I missed the delivery Friday so they are being redelivered Monday as Martin has the day off work.

Update: I thought I’d add my first ever YouTube video which goes through everything I got as well!

GEM Check, Check It Out Dress

Original price: £90

I paid: £35.00

I love, love this dress and I’ve been wanting it for ages but couldn’t justify the price! The one I got is from what I can tell in perfect condition apart from the fact that the inside lining isn’t sewn onto the dress. However, it doesn’t hang loose and I can just ask Martin to stitch it or to be honest leave it how it is.

Check it out dress 2
When you’re so tired after the sample sale (ha, ha)!

GEM Black Fluffed Up Top

Original price: £45.00

I paid: £30.00

This wasn’t much of a discount however this top is sold out and has been for a while so I knew if I saw it I wanted to pick it up. It look super cute with the sleeves and I love, love, love the furry pink sleeves (if you’ve seen my Topshop denim jacket with the pink fur sleeves you’ll know this is a reoccurring theme for me).

GEM Heart Throb Bag

Original price: £60.00

I paid: £45.00

Again, another one on the pricey side but this is a bag I’ve been wanting for ages and since I had picked up the check it out dress and pink fluffy sheer top I knew I had to complete the look (I almost picked up the cap too but it is £20.00 and it is currently on sale on the website for £25.00 so couldn’t justify it). It also looks completely new and I couldn’t see any faults at all. For people who don’t know, as I didn’t the bag also comes with complete with a strap inside (I haven’t shown this but can take pictures if anyone wants me too) so you can wear it as a cross body bag too.

GEM Exclusive Pink Satin Dress

Price: I think £15? I had to ask for the price as there was no label on the dress (the staff were super helpful though and I was pleased to see there was lots of them this year). I’m not sure if that’s right though but when working out how much I spent that’s how much it comes to!

I’ve seen this before maybe like once from someone on the Lazy Oaf Facebook group so knew this was a GEM piece that was never released. I have a bizarre obsession with having clothing that is rare and no one else has (especially with Lazy Oaf as I am a bit of collector) so knew I had to have this. I’m still not sure if it suits me or is flattering so let me know in the comments. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it says ‘Call Me’ on one of the sleeves which I don’t think the dress needed but you can’t really see when it is on so I don’t mind. I also would like to point out this comes with pockets – it’s also quite short and I’m a small fry but it’s just about ok.

Exclusive gem dress

Zippy Purple Bear Bag

Original price: I think about £35

I paid: £15

I have been coveting this for ages but it’s been sold out everywhere so I was definitely hoping this would be at the sale. I couldn’t see it at first in the bag section but my chance I was there having a look through and by chance I turned over and suddenly there it was! The stitching around the trademark Lazy Oaf eyes is a little messy but it’s nothing I can’t easily clean up!

Purple zippy bag

Queen of Hearts coat

Original price: £180 (I think)

I paid: £60

I knew going in that I wanted to buy a coat, as I really lacked a winter coat last year and knew that a Lazy Oaf option would be super soft and comfy. I never suspected that I would get one of my dream coats (I have the matching dress and beret so this was dream!). The girl at the front of the queue (sorry I don’t know your name!) had this near her, as she was going through what she picked up and I asked if she wanted it and she said no go ahead! I’m so happy I got this and I do think I pull it off better than I did the GEM Leopard one as I quickly tried it on. It’s a little snug but I never do my coats up like that anyway and I LOVE it. The only thing I’ve got missing from that look is the bag (one day!!) and the Dr Martens (which, I wouldn’t get as their leather anyway – please Lazy Oaf do a vegetarian/ vegan collab as the Dr Martens are so cute!).

Queen coat 2

Pink Casper Boo dress

Original price: I think about £80

I paid: £30

I along with everyone else was shocked when we saw that there was Casper stuff at the sale after we had furiously screenshot the video Lazy Oaf posted on their story. I asked Martin to try and pick up this and the sheer dress but the girls in front of me in the queue got their first, which I’m honestly 100% not upset about as they wanted it a lot more than me and I got the pink one (thanks Martin! – he demanded I put that in here, ha, ha. He also picked up the dress and then ran up to me looking lost and confused!).

This gapes a bit annoyingly at the chest at the button holes the way dresses annoyingly sometimes do and I’m disappointed it’s a bit sheer (it all needs a good iron – so it’s in the wrong household!). However, the collar makes it all worth it and I can just wear a black cami underneath. I also saw someone there with the white Casper top so I think they had a few Casper pieces there.

Casper dress 2

Capser dress collar

Bonus free top

After you checked out they also had a bit where you could grab free stickers and a free top! This one is actually really cute – I love the pink and red stripes. I think this was a really lovely touch and it showed how much more organised the sale was this year (well done everyone!).

34984598_2522723207953494_411458863389212672_n

Overall, then I’m really happy with what I got at the sale. I was hoping for some of the new GEM drop but that might be at the winter sale, as it’s still a very recent addition. However, I’m hoping I will have some of the pieces before then! The atmosphere was also a lot nicer and I was out there a lot quicker than last time (I was in then about 20 minutes to half an hour I think). I also noticed that people didn’t leave piles of clothes on the floor this much this time. I didn’t mind of course when people were sorting through but I always made sure if I changed my mind about something that I put it back on the rails and I think most people did this too, as I noticed a lot of stuff because it had been put back where it originally was. Another thing I noticed this time was that people went for it trying stuff on (ha, ha), which was fair enough, as you want to check the stuff fits but it just shocked me (I think I’m just too reserved as a person)!

Finally, I want to say a big shout out to the lovely group of girls in front of me in the queue, a few of you have added me on Facebook already but please do keep in touch and add me as friend if you want to! It was pleasure hanging out with you all and thank you for all being super lovely. Also, wanted to say a shout out to Jessica Chelsey who I follow on Instagram and who was super lovely in person – it was pleasure talking to you!

P.S. There was also a plain white version (as in completely white) version of the Check It Out Dress that I wanted to DIY with a cool pattern but it was £50 so I couldn’t justify what would have been my poor attempt at crafts.

Update: I just realised how this would make a really cool Steven Universe DIY (to look like Pearl’s top!).

Update: Thought this might be useful for people – this did not include the Betty Boop / GEM stuff which was individually priced.

MCM London Comic Con haul: May 2018

Despite how many years I’ve being going to MCM London Comic Con and how many times I’ve been to the Excel centre; I still managed to almost get lost on the way there. However, we ultimately did make it there and made some friends in our confused state on the way (I’m lucky that I’ve always had lovely experiences with the people I’ve met at cons and on the way to con).

This year was one of the first times in a while I felt like I was going for me. Therefore, in the end I didn’t take as many pictures as I usually would because I just wanted to relax, enjoy the con and have a chill time (hence why I chose to go Friday, as it’s generally one of the quieter days). I also had a little bit of money to spend this time so actually had some joy looking at the merchandise. Though maybe because I actually had money; I was actually less tempted than usual. I did ultimately pick up some goodies, which I wanted to share, as I lot of them from independent artists and that is always nice to share and promote!

Pusheen x Artbox

This was one of the stalls I knew I definitely had to visit at con and it did not disappoint with it’s Pusheen goodness. I really was mostly interested in the pins but to purchase the pins you had to buy an item to be able to buy each pin (i.e. buy one item you can buy one pin, buy two you can buy two pins, etc.). I could only really afford to buy one item and a pin even though I really wanted two of the pins (pins you could chose from are below).

☆~~ Pin Giveaway ~~☆ We are thrilled to present the complete collection of enamel pins from the Pusheen x ARTBOX collaboration (yes, there is a third one; it's sparkly and can be worn as a collar chain)!! . You'll be able to pick up these beauties at the Pusheen x ARTBOX booth at MCM London Comic Con this weekend and ARTBOX Covent Garden next weekend, but for those of you who can't make it ~ we are giving away the full set of three pins, to THREE lucky winners! TO ENTER: . • Follow @artbox_uk and tag a friend in a comment on this post (1 ENTRY) . and/or . • Upload a photo of your Pusheen collection or Pusheen outfit, tag @artbox_uk and @pusheen in the photo and use hashtag #pusheenartboxuk (5 ENTRIES) . ————————– . Giveaway is open worldwide, and closes on 11th June 2018. Winners will be drawn at random. Two winners will be selected from Instagram and one from Facebook. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Instagram. #artboxuk #pusheen #pusheencat #pusheenthecat #enamelpin #pingame #pingamestrong #pusheenicorn #stormythecat #superpusheenicorn

A post shared by ARTBOX Covent Garden (@artbox_uk) on

In the end I decided to get the unicorn pusheen pin (it was between that pin and the pastel one) because I liked how it could double up on a shirt collar if I wanted it too.

pusheen-unicorn.jpg

Pusheen unicorn 2

Luckily, I was able to find an item that I wanted to buy that was also something that was really cute (not hard when its pusheen) and that was a birthday cake pusheen keyring. I wanted a keyring, as thought it would look cute on one of my bags and I liked the birthday cake pusheen because it’s my birthday coming up so I love all things birthday at the moment.

Birthday cake pusheen.jpg
Birthday cake pusheen or me in pusheen form.

I also wanted to visit the Artbox store because I knew there would be a competition to win a GIANT PUSHEEN.

Giant pusheen.jpg
MY SON!!! (I know Pusheen is a girl, I blame Pixielocks for this, ha, ha)

Although, I know I will not win this competition I am still stubbornly determined that I will and desire it with my whole heart because I am pretty sure the pusheen length wise is about as big as me. Though I’m not sure if the giant pusheen you win is the size of the one above or below – either way I want it!!

Overall, I really loved the Pusheen x Artbox collaboration because the ice cream sundae theme was pastel perfection. So much so that I couldn’t bear myself to throw away the leaflet I got with my purchase because it was just too cute (I mean look at Pusheen’s little hat!)

Pusheen x Artbox.jpg

Pokémon Sylveon purse

I’ve been wanting to get another purse for a while now so when I saw that this adorable Sylveon purse was only £8 I couldn’t resist. I also liked how it was a bit smaller than some of my other purses so that it could be used to accompany smaller bags or when I don’t have a lot of room in my bag!

I still can’t decide on my favourite Eevee evolution so it took a few minutes of deliberating before I chose this style but I thought the pink and blue would match a lot of what I have in my wardrobe already. This purse also came with a little bag of sweets (which, I unfortunately can’t eat because they’re haribo) and a badge that I thought was a super lovely touch.

Sailor Moon manga vol. 4

I’ve been wanting this volume for a while now because I needed to know what happened next so when I was finally able to find a stall that sold manga (I kept seeing stalls with manga in the title that only sold anime) I couldn’t resist this. I was also very tempted by The Ancient Magus Bride manga but decided to resist for now and go with the Sailor Moon because I am already in the middle of reading the series. I’ve actually already read this volume and I love it – I sense Sailor Pluto is going to become one of my favourite Sailor Scouts.

Sailor Moon Vol. 4

Sailor V Pop Figure

In keeping with the Sailor Moon theme I also picked up this Sailor V Pop figure because I’d been eyeing it for a while on Forbidden Planet because it was an exclusive (so wanted to get it while it was available). Sailor Venus is one of my favourite scouts and I love this look and figure however I was a bit disappointed with the figure’s quality. As you can see in the image the paintwork by her feet is messy and both her feet can’t go on the stand at the same time because either her feet aren’t far enough apart or the stand is made incorrectly.

Sailor V Pop figure.jpg

Geen Jones artwork

So now let’s finally get onto some of the amazing artwork I picked up. The prints by Geeno Jones were reduced because they were old/ some had slight imperfections. My untrained eye didn’t notice any issues and I really loved the print of the girl with the cherries in her hair so much I had to have it.

Cherry print hair

I’m not sure if I’m going to frame these or what I’m going to do with them! I know I want them on display somewhere however.

Geeno Kiki.jpg

I had to of course pick up their Kiki print (I don’t think I can resist any Kiki’s Delivery Service artwork).

Yuri on Ice prints.jpg

One thing I noticed at con was that there was a LOT of Yuri on Ice merchandise (which, I’m not complaining about). I managed to resist a lot of it but had to pick up these adorable pastel prints of Yuri and Viktor. These I definitely think I want to frame (maybe in a special double frame) and have on a table or alternatively on my wall somewhere.

If you like Geen Jones’ artwork you can find them on the below links.

Etsy: geeniejay

Here’s some of my favourite picks from their shop:

At the Flowers girl cafe print

Pastel Witch print

Cats of Anime print

Morgana Amelia artwork

I only picked up two stickers from this store but I love, love their work so can definitely see myself picking up more in the future. I’ve recently started watching Steven Universe (which, I love!!) so could not resist picking up these Pearl and Amethyst stickers.

I doubt I’ll ever be able to commit to sticking them on anything though because they are just too pretty.

If you like Morgana Amelia’s artwork you can find them on the below links:

I personally wish I’d picked up this beautiful piece of artwork!!! So if you’re at con and you see their stall, don’t be silly like me and get this before it’s too late!

Weiliwonka stickers

I for some reason bought a lot of stickers that I’m going to be unable to stick anywhere this con but I just could not resist these two sets of stickers featuring all my Studio Ghibli favourites.

Studio Ghibli stickers 1

Studio Ghibli stickers 2

If you love these stickers as much as me you can check out Weiliwonka on the below links:

The Custom Cupcake Company cupcakes, fudge and brownies

I couldn’t of course go to con without picking up my favourite fudge in the entire world. Both Martin and I picked up a box (which, surprisingly are still partly intact). As always the staff were super friendly and helpful and everything was covered in glitter – I can never fault them!

So here it is my small(ish) MCM London Comic Con haul. I hope everyone who went to con had a great time and please do comment below with what you picked up or any artists’ work you admire!

April (April is the Cruellest Month)

-Blog posts Thursday and Sundays-

What I got for Christmas: 2017

This post probably comes more than a little bit late, but since my blog post talking about what I got for my birthday last year was one of my most popular posts; I thought that I definitely should stop procrastinating and get to writing this post. As mentioned in the last post, and as I will probably mention in every blog post about presents, I am a very lucky person who was very spoilt. I appreciate every gift given to me, and I am not doing this to brag but for the people out there who are nosy like me, or are interested in similar things to me. Also, that sounded a lot more blasé than I meant it to be- I am truly grateful- I promise!

First of all, before I get into this post I would like to give a shout out to the people who very kindly bestowed me with money, I’m not going to say who because for some reason that feels tacky (ha, ha) but if they are missed out of this list then you know who. Also, I would like to give a shout out to my boyfriend who bought me tickets to go see Dodie on the 1st of April in London!!! If you could not already tell I am incredibly excited for this, and happy that he is lovely enough to accompany me even though this is something he will not enjoy no where near as much.

From my Mother and close family

Some of my presents I actually bought and my mum gave me the money for because a lot of them only I could get, as for example I bought the Dodie merchandise from the Dodie pop-up shop in London. My mum did also buy some little presents so I had things to open Christmas Day, and wrapped my Danielle Nicole clutch, even though I was the one who ordered it because my mum struggled with the website (you have to sign up to order and the process takes a while!).

Dodie ‘I promise you it will all make sense again’ jumper

Dodie 3

I have written about this before in my Dodie pop up shop post (linked above), but I’ll speak a little about it again. I really love this jumper. It’s super soft and comfy. Unfortunately, at the moment because it tangled with something fluffy in the wash it needs attacking with a lint roller but I can’t wait to wear it again, and will probably have to be stopped from buying another one when I go see Dodie in April. If this jumper is something that speaks to you, you can now buy it on Dodie’s online shop along with other awesome merchandise.

Dodie Secrets for the Mad book

Dodie Secrets for the Mad

Again, I’ve already written about this before but I love, love, love this book. It is definitely one of my best reads of 2017. If you’re struggling to think about how you need to just take some time, reflect and look after your body this book is a read for you. It’s also interlaced with lyrics, and images throughout so is not a long read either if lengthy reads are not your thing.

Danielle Nicole Harry Potter Ravenclaw Uniform Clutch

Ravenclaw clutch

One of the things that came a bit late last minute before Christmas was this Ravenclaw clutch bag. I was actually lucky to get mine on QVC UK (lucky because it kept going in and out of stock). The price was also good as well as it was £25 with £3 added on for shipping as far as I remember. At the moment the bag is still available on the Danielle Nicole website for $48.00 dollars for pre-order but combined with the international shipping price and likely custom fees the QVC UK price I thought was a bargain. Apart from wanting this to fuel my Harry Potter obsession (and to build up items for a *cough* *cough* Ravenclaw fashion lookbook); the bags from the Harry Potter collection are all leather free as well, which is a big plus for me.

My one annoyance with this bag is that the chain is not as long as I would like, as I would prefer the chain to be long enough so I could wear the bag across me, which would especially be useful for night outs (not that I’m a party animal in any way- I mean night outs going to eat food).

Overall, this bag is well made (the inside of it is gorgeous) and it gives you a little bit of house pride in everyday life, as well as a bit of glitter, which is always a good thing in my book.

Stocking fillers

Stocking Filler

My mum had this adorable little stocking for me full of presents under the tree so I had something to rummage through on Christmas Day. It contained a bunch of beauty products from a brand called Flutter. Flutter is a Superdrug own brand, and when I searched through the cruelty free brands on Superdrug’s website Flutter came up as one of those brands.

Nail Files

These nail files have super cute patterns on and make me want me to file my nails more, even though I am useless at it. Also, if someone could show me how to use them properly that would be super helpful, as one of them has flying cats on it so I need to make them a part of my life.

Lip Balm

These lip balms are also super cute, I haven’t tried them out yet but I’m always in need of lip balm because my lips get super dry in the winter, and it has hit a cold spell again where I am (I swear my feet are doomed to be permanently cold).

This little eyeshadow set is also adorable, and I like how it is a neutrals palette, as I personally tend to gravitate towards shimmers or ‘fun’ colours and then forget that I need neutrals to actually build up most of the looks I like. Therefore, I can’t wait to try this out as I think some of the colours will pair nice with (spoiler alert) another eye shadow palette I received for Christmas. The shades all have a nice bit of gold sparkle to them, but I haven’t swatched them just because I don’t think the first two shades will show up on my skin tone very well (but if you are interested in me swatching them let me know)!

Primark Harry Potter pyjamas

Hogwarts Alumni

My sister works at Primark so she picked me up these super cute fleece Harry Potter pyjamas for my mum as a present for me (and also the next present below, which was from her). Since it is very cold at the moment this is a present I am very grateful for!

Primark Bmo pyjamas

BMO pyjamas

Please ignore the stain- food as usual has betrayed me lol.

As I type I am sat in these pyjamas right now. They are incredibly comfy and go great with my Primark Bmo nightgown. Bmo is definitely one of my favourite Adventure Time characters, and I love all the Primark Adventure Time stuff- if anyone ever sees anything with Marceline or Princess Bubblegum on let me know!

From my Grandad

My grandad got a variety of knick knacks that only he could pick out as usual (that is not intended to be a ‘dig’ though!), and this diary and owl purse are cute favourites of mine. One, because I always need a diary because I got through notebooks so quickly. Two, because this little purse is so cute, and would make a great Autumn purse (and yes I like to coordinate things by season!).

From Martin’s family

I got absolutely spoilt by Martin’s family (well, I got spoilt from everyone lol) and I’ll be honest I love it. Prepared to see a mixture of makeup, books and more, as well as a big insight into the kind of things I like.

Paramore After Laughter Vinyl

Paramore After Laughter

Although, I admit I was not sure about Paramore’s new album at first, I’ve grown to love it. No, it’s not my favourite ever Paramore album but some of the songs are absolute bops, and I’m gutted that I couldn’t get tickets to see them this January. Also, this reminds me that we really need to get some drawers to store our Vinyl in because knowing me I will find a way to damage it if I don’t have a proper place to store it.

Decorative Hedgehogs

Decorative Hedgehogs.jpg

For those who are unaware I like hedgehogs ornaments and so am very happy that there are people willing to fuel that obsession. These ones are super cute as well, I just need to find somewhere to put them as I am in desperate need of a set of drawers.

By some miracle of nature we have not devoured these already- if you know how much I love sugar- you’ll realise just how much of a miracle this is. I think Martin and I definitely need to have a movie night at some point and make our way through these (the Reese bar however is firmly mine).

Edit: This post was written over a few days- we have devoured (well Martin has) quite a few of these now.

This One Summer graphic novel

This One Summer

This was in fact a recommendation from the person I always talk to in my local comic shop (I won’t say their name for privacy reasons- I don’t know if they want their name splashing all over the internet!- ok in a little corner of the internet).

The first thing that grabbed me about this graphic novel is that the artwork and style is just so beautiful. The second, the plot, but the below will explain that better than me, so without further ado here is the official blurb that I saw on Amazon:

“Every summer, Rose goes with her mum and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It’s their getaway, their refuge. Rosie’s friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose’s mum and dad won’t stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. It’s a summer of secrets and sorrow and growing up, and it’s a good thing Rose and Windy have each other.”

Also, an interesting and sad fact about this graphic novel is that it made headlines because it was banned from a Minnesota school library reportedly because it contained, “inappropriate language”. It has also been banned because it, “includes LGBT characters, drug use, and profanity, and it was considered sexually explicit with mature themes”.

I’ve not yet finished this graphic novel, but what I have read so far it is bittersweet in the best way possible. I’m planning to write a review once I’ve finished so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Kiki’s Delivery Service DVD

As mentioned in my other blog post about the subject Kiki’s Delivery Service is my all time favourite Studio Ghibli film (so far!). I’m hoping to one day collect all of the films in the collection. Hence, why I took a picture to highlight that this is ‘number 5’ in the DVD collection. Martin is already prepared for me to watch this over and over again.

Chocolate coins

Chocolate Coins

Martin’s family always get me chocolate coins, which I very much appreciate. There is something undeniably fascinating about ripping the foil off each individual coin that I don’t get with chocolates like Celebrations where I just find it annoying having to individually unwrap each one.

Kat Von D ‘Saint’ Perfume and Lipstick set

I have mentioned previously how I’ve been looking for a cruelty free perfume to replace my old choice of Chanel, and when I smelled ‘Saint’ by Kat Von D Beauty I knew that it was definitely going to be one of my choices (another favourite I’ve tried is Vanillary from Lush). The lipstick that comes with this mini set it also very ‘me’, as while all my friends rock the dark tones I’m always there with the bright pink lip just bopping around.

Saint Swatch

That’s my fist by the way- it just looks like a weird blob in this photo so I thought I better mention it!

Kat Von D Everlasting mini lipstick collection

Kat Von D Lip

I would like to preface by saying that I absolutely adore the shade Lovecraft in this collection, in fact it might even beat my Lolita II as my favourite Kat Von D shade and I will definitely need to buy a full size tube when my mini one infinitely runs out.

In regards to swatches I’m going to make a full post with proper swatches on my lips for all my Kat von D lipsticks but for now I’ve swatched all the shades on my arm only for this post.

Kat von D swatches

From top down: Lovecraft, Ludwig, Sanctuary, Madrid, Hawkwind, Exorcism, Damned and Witches.

Lindt and Baileys gift set

Lindt and Baileys

Even more chocolate! I’m not a big drinker but Baileys is more of a sweet treat to most people anyway (including me) and it will be lovely in a hot chocolate when I’m cosying up at the weekend.

From my friend, Holly

I think Holly and I are just obsessed with buying each other Pop! figures so I was unsurprised and delighted when this Yurio Pop! figure made it’s way to me. Also, this gives me an excuse to complete the Yuri! On Ice collection, as I am trying to not start buy Pop! figures from too many different franchises at once and instead build up sets.

Yurio Pop

From my friend, Callie

As per usual my friend Callie got me way too much, and also proved how much she knows me/ listens to my social media rants.

Juvia’s Place The Magic palette

Before you ask in the second photograph I have already used the eyeshadows a few times and that’s why they looked used! This palette is so beautiful and as a lover of shimmers this palette a dreamboat. You can definitely build some beautiful looks out of this palette, but I’d personally recommend pairing it with another palette for looks if you’re someone who likes quite neutral transition shades though there are a few really workable mattes on the palette.

On the left image from top to bottom is: Nubia, Zakiya, Osun, Kesi (hard to see on my skin tone), Zuba, Nana, Borunu, Kogi, Faso.

On the right from top to bottom is: Aja, Vai, Yemoja, Ife, Yara, Buzo and Yejide.

As you can see I am not a brilliant swatcher but here are what all the colours look like on my skin tone. You probably won’t be able to see it but in between the pink and orange-gold on the left swatch there is actually a swatch of the shade ‘Kesi’. It does show up a bit more on my eyes and in person, but I like to use it as a base coat personally.

Snowflake Cookie Yankee Candle

Yankee Candle

After being devastated when I thought this candle had disappeared after Christmas, I was very happy to receive this as a gift (we exchanged our gifts after Christmas). It just smells so good, and it so my aesthetic that it hurts. Until otherwise noted this is my all time favourite Yankee candle. Also, according to a quick google search Yankee candles are from what information I could see cruelty free and vegan.

Primark Pusheen Mermaid Slippers

Once again proving how much Callie knows me she bought me these mermaid pusheen slippers (the black fluff is from a pair of leggings I own lol). These are super duper snug and since my feet are always cold I love these (our flat has a lot of wooden flooring though my feet are always cold anyway). Also, the tree is because Christmas (though I may have forgotten just a little bit to take it down). I love these though they are the second pair of slipper sock things Callie has bought me (the first being a Marie pair) so I think she just loves buying me slippers for some reason.

Mermaid Pusheen

Mermaid cuddly

This pusheen lives at my workplace but I bought her home for the weekend to take a picture. I love all things pusheen and pastel so mermaid pusheen is a dream come true to me. Also, I am trying to collect a pusheen for each season (I already have a witch one for halloween) and for some reason this pusheen screams Spring to me!

The Boxing Day sales (or from myself)

One thing I’m not sure if I really liked is that the boxing day sales in a lot of cases started earlier than Boxing Day this year. For people like me who rely on Christmas money to fuel their bargains in the sale this was a bit of an annoying move though an understandable one- it meant less of the pressure on shops on Boxing Day so hopefully more people could enjoy their Christmas. Since, I massively missed out on the Black Friday deals due to being very broke at the time, I really wanted to get some good sale goodies.

Asos

The first thing I purchased was this dress from Lazy Oaf on Asos that was reduced from £68.00 to £30.00. Having coveted this dress for a very long time I could just not resist this deal. In person this dress is so super cute and like all Lazy Oaf dresses it has pockets! I haven’t managed to get a good picture of me wearing this yet but check out these super cute babes who make this dress look amazing (and inspire me on how I’m going to wear mine).

Topshop and H and M

I also bought this super cute denim jacket from Topshop that was in the sale.

Topshop Denim Jacket

Mustard top: H&M (old)

Playsuit: H&M (I can’t find the exact one online but it is this one but with a flower print)

Scarf: Platform 9/34’s shop

Bag: Primark (I got this from the Tottenham Court Road Primark in London, which is often referred to as the ‘Harry Potter Primark’ but I’ve seen it in plenty of other Primarks).

Tights: Primark

Loafers: Topshop (old)

I got very excited about this outfit, hence why I’m pretending I’m a model. The jacket is just so super cute. I had wanted it for a while, saw it in the sale and was determined to resist. I then realised I had made a mistake and saw it was sold out online! Therefore, when I went in my local Topshop and saw the jacket there I knew I had to have it. Which is my excuse to why I gave the person who was right in front of me stroking it evils. Luckily, she moved on and I quickly grabbed it. It’s slightly cropped, which I sometimes like in a jacket as it compliments my body shape. At the moment the jacket is out of stock on the Topshop website but try checking back because after I bought it I noticed it was back in stock again in a few sizes. The jacket was originally £49.00 and reduced to £34.00.

Game

One thing I also was excited to buy for myself in the sale for £12.99 at Game is this Kylo Ren Christmas jumper. Although, I will probably lose it before next Christmas and I wish it was more socially acceptable to wear it all year round I just couldn’t resist it, especially as I coveted it before but I didn’t want to splurge when it was £24.99.

Red Hair

Lush

I feel like my love of Lush is well documented on this blog and I couldn’t resist picking up a few goodies in the sale, especially as everything was half price! However, I did use the opportunity to try some products I’ve wanted to try, as well as pick up a favourite from Halloween.

Snow Fairy

I can’t find my receipt but after doing some digging I think the original price for this 250g bottle was £7.95 and in the sale it around £3.97 to £4.00. This shower gel smells AMAZING (translation: like sweets) and next Christmas I will definitely be stocking up on this again. Personally, I wish they sold this all year round because I will be super sad when it runs out.

Since I was a large fan of the Lush Halloween collection this year, particularly the Pumpkin bath bomb, I couldn’t resist picking up this little set, especially as I regretted not trying out the pink pumpkin bubble bar (it also looks super cute- it’s one of those ones that it is bittersweet when you actually use it!). This was £12.95 I think normally and about £6.47 or £6.48 in the sale.

Shoot for the Stars bath bomb

My final purchase from Lush was this Shoot for the Stars bath bomb. I really loved this bath bomb. For one thing it turns your bath a lovely cascade of blue shades, and I also really loved how it leaves the little gold stars floating in your bath for a while. There is something in this bath bomb that leaves your skin super soft as well afterwards. I am very gutted this is a Christmas special after trying it, as I would definitely buy this again! This bath bomb was somewhere between £3-£4 and so about £1.50-£2 in the sale. All I remember is that all together everything I bought from Lush was about £12 when usually just the Pumpkin set would have probably cost that.

There is all it is then- the many lovely presents I got and bought myself after Christmas (minus a 1kg bar of Cadburys from Wilkos that was half price, as I didn’t think that necessary to document!). I hope you enjoyed this post and be sure to let me know what you’re favourite present that you got for Christmas was in the comments below.

Mini Lush Haul/Review: August 2017

(For some reason it looks like the bath bomb has a hair embedded in it- it didn’t- it must of been part of one of the flowers!)

I have watched (though ironically not read) a lot of Lush hauls in my time so I know the market is a little bit oversaturated but I still thought why not add my own Lush haul to the mix? Plus, you know then my content for two posts straight will be exclusively about bath stuff.

Right, so first let’s start with a bit about Lush as a company, since you know in regards to both clothing and cosmetics (etc.) I like to give any information about the company that I have found. In regards to being cruelty free Lush do not buy any raw materials that have been tested on animals. However, due to the new REACH chemical legislation Lush are not completely cruelty free because: ‘If a supplier gets involved in animal testing due to the unavoidable requirements of meeting the requirements of REACH legislation, we have to ‘accept’ this’. Their products however are all vegetarian, with a lot being vegan, and a lot of people still include them on cruelty free lists because of the dedication they have put towards being cruelty free over the years, and the strength of their other policies. Therefore, Lush is one of those I’m going to call “middle ground” companies  (like makeup brands where the ‘parent’ company is not cruelty free but the brand you are buying for is), where it’s up to you if you want to buy from them or not. Personally, I am trying to make my beauty routine completely cruelty free at the moment (which, I’m going to write a post about soon) and am not sure where I lie on this debate. I have seen Lush’s history of fighting against animal testing and how they continuously protest against what is happening, and the fact that their ingredients are vegetarian (and vegan at times) does appeal to me. I’d love however to hear everyone’s thoughts- in my mind though I don’t have an issue with anyone who uses Lush, and considers themselves cruelty free. If anyone’s interested I’ve also labelled whether the ingredients for each product are vegetarian or vegan.

Now on the haul. First of all if I’m being honest, I got this haul in July (not August- I thought the title would be confusing otherwise) because I was really stressed, and just needed a little treat. I thought some Lush stuff, and a nice bath would help. Which it did, but I was still stressed (dissertation pressure), though it definitely took the edge off.

“DON’T LOOK AT ME” Face Mask

Don't Look at Me Fresh Face Mask(Apologises for my awful nails.)

Don't Look At Me Mask

So I bought this because I wanted a face mask that wasn’t so “heavy duty”. I try to drink a lot of the old H20, and at the point I was being really consistent so spot wise I was doing ok. I was looking then for something to just brighten my skin and give it a good glow. So I had a little chat with one of the lovely customer assistants, and she recommended I try the “DON’T LOOK AT ME” face mask. This face mask then is one of their ‘fresh’ ones so you have to keep it in the fridge, and it doesn’t last as long as their other ones (like Mask of Magnaminty for example). I have to say I’m not sure if brightening is the mask’s primary effect but it definitely cleans a lot of the gunk out of your face. I used it recently, as my skin was feeling a bit oily (a product of not eating right and my face getting angry at me), and it did a great job at clearing out my t-zone.

The Mask(With the mask on.)

Martin Mask(Martin also tried the mask. He was not happy about picture time. Or probably how unevenly I spread it on his face.)

Face After(After the mask. Sorry there’s no before, I did take one but I was a bit vain and didn’t include it because it was really unflattering! I will make to take ones in future try on’s though.)

The one downside of this mask though is that is smells so overwhelmingly of lemon (and something else I can’t quite put my finger on) and I have to admit it puts me off buying it again. I’d rather buy a different “heavy duty” mask (as I do think this is not so much a “light duty” mask) that doesn’t overwhelm my nostrils as much (ironic I know when talking about Lush products).

Price: £7.25/75g

Rating: 3/5

This product is VEGAN.

“Bunny Moon” Jelly Face Mask

Bunny Moon

So I’m going to be honest I bought this because when I prodded the sample it wiggled. Also, honey is one of my favourite smells so I had to pick the one that smelled like honey up. Basically, how it works is you grab some of the jelly, work it into a paste with your hands and then apply the paste onto your face. I found it a little annoying to work with at times, but once you get used to it’s mostly fine. Plus, your skin will feels so soft afterwards (I put this on generally after the “DON’T LOOK AT ME” mask to get a bit of hydration back into my skin). The only other downside of this mask is that because of the paste texture I find it a bit hard to wash off, as it seems to want to combine with water more than anything. I’d definitely be interested in trying some more of these out, especially as they all appear to have different effects.

Price: £6.95 each.

Rating: 3/5

This product is NOT VEGAN. It is however VEGETARIAN.

Now on to the bath bombs…

“Titsy Tosty” Bath Bomb

Titsy Tosty

Ok, so this bath bomb is just so pretty. It’d make such a great themed Valentine’s day present. However, the lovely shop assistant who served me at the till at Lush told me that these are going to be out of circulation soon. Something, which I found confirmed on the Lush website. You may still be able to find these in some stores however I’m assuming. I can’t remember the price of the bath bomb, however, and since it’s no longer online I can’t check. I do think though that it’s just about their average price so somewhere in the four pounds range. I also got some awesome video footage (check me out) of this as it dissolved in my bath, which will be on my Instagram: @aprilisthecruellestmonthblog and on my Instagram story on my main account @aprilisthecruellestmonth. I would put it on here but I need to upgrade my plan in order to include video footage, and unfortunately I’m not financially able to at the moment. Overall, this bath bomb is for you if you don’t mind having a bath full of dead flowers in order to get that vintage, Tumblr-esque vibe going on (they also get stuck in the drain afterwards which means you have to fish them out). I did though feel quite soft afterwards, which is always a bonus.

Titsy Tosty 2

Rating: 3/5

This product is VEGAN. (Update: Found it for $6.95 on the American website so my according to Google this made it £5.39, but I genuinely don’t remember it being that pricey).

“Dragon’s Egg” Bath Bomb

Dragon's Egg 1

Ok, so it said in the description that there was popping candy in this bath bomb so it makes popping noises as it settles into your bath. I don’t know if it was just that my extractor fan in my bathroom was loud, but no noise did I hear my bath bomb make. It did make the bath water go orange though, and a lot more ORANGE than the photograph is making it seem- the lighting in the bathroom was just terrible. Overall, it was a nice bath bomb I was just hoping for more colours and magic based on the description, and it fell a little flat for me.

Dragon's Egg 2

Orange Water(My bath water with the bomb in there.)

Price: £3.95 each

Rating: 2/5 (see it’s finally not 3/5!)

This product is VEGAN.

“Metamorphosis” Bath Bomb

So this was a purchase for the Martin in my life, as I know he would not be happy if he didn’t get a present in my little splurge. I thought it looked a bit like a dragon’s egg so thought he’d appreciate it because he is obsessed with Game of Thrones. Plus, he’s definitely more into the darker, and cool tone palette than bright tones. However, there is no rating for this product because he is yet to try it out, and I have no pictures because I’ve just moved and have not unpacked enough yet (still!) to be able to attempt to find it!

Price: £4.25 each.

Rating: Unclassified (because Martin is yet to try it out, so here is yet another incomplete review!)

This product is VEGAN.

So that’s the end of my little Lush haul. Let me know if you’ve been enjoying these little review/ haul type posts about bath products, or if there any posts you’d like to see more of. For anyone who enjoys my feminist reading journey series news of that will be coming very soon so until next time!

Game of Thrones (Foams) Geeky Clean Bath Haul

So I’m finally back to blogging! My dissertation is done, so I provisionally have a Masters degree, and I’ve just moved into a new flat. Everything then is still definitely all systems go at the moment but I’ve missed blogging and getting regular content out so much, and I’m hoping that I can manage to start to maintain posting twice a week! I’m thinking Mondays and Fridays so there’s one post to start the week and one to finish the week off. Also, since I want to keep my main Instagram a bit more aesthetic (blame the amazing Youtuber PixieLocks who I got the idea from) I’ve got a new Instagram just for blog content : @aprilisthecruellestmonthblog so if you’re interested check me out there. I’ll still post stuff about my every day life in my main account: @aprilisthecruellestmonth but a lot of it will mostly be in my story, and my feed content will be a lot more fashion based.

However, enough of that let’s get on with this haul/ review of Geeky Clean’s June (yes, I’m behind, I know, I’ll explain in a bit) Game of Thrones themed, ‘Game of Foams’ (I appreciate the strong pun game) crate. So first of all the reason its took me so long to get to this is because in June I thought I might be moving back home, so thought I better send the crate to my mum, and basically I wasn’t able to see her to pick it up, till like a week or two ago. I’d like to note though that I actually stupidly emailed them and asked them to change it to my mum’s address in a panic, and, they were super accommodating and replied super fast! However, since Game of Thrones is currently on air, it actually has turned out to apt time to do this review.

First of all, let’s start with a little background on the company I ordered from. So Geeky Clean is an independent bath, beauty, candles (you name it) company who specialise in products based on fandoms. All their products are cruelty free, and vegan so that gets a big tick from me. I actually first saw them at MCM London Comic Con in May, and after smelling their Harry Potter ‘Butterbeer’ candle I was obsessed so grabbed a business card, and checked out their website. It was there that I saw that they do a monthly themed crate. Each crate is £15 (shipping is then £4.50 in the UK on top of that- not saying that to bash them or anything, as I have no issue with charging shipping, I’m just making everyone aware). Each crate contains a soap, bath bomb, candle and 2 mystery items!

The crate I received contained, ‘Mother of Dragons’ body lotion (scented with dragonsblood), ‘Wild Fire’ soy wax candle (scented with smoke, wood and mist), ‘Great Grass Sea’ bath sherbet’ (scented with herbs, patchouli and sea breeze), ‘Dracarys Dragon Soap’ (scented with cedar, patchouli, vetiver and fresh pine) and ‘Stallion Heart Soap’ (scented with lily, herbs and greenery).

Game of Foams

Let me tell you first of all, that it all smells amazing. The body lotion is a particular favourite of mine, because it soaks in so fast, and doesn’t leave you with that horrible greasy lotion feeling afterwards. If they stocked it on the website I would definitely buy it again, and again. I’m not sure what dragonblood is supposed to smell like but to me it smells like a fresh, smoky scent if that makes sense (and by smoky I don’t mean like you burnt your pizza smell). In fact, all of the crate smells very ‘fresh’ and like you was just in the middle of a field after hanging out with dragons, which you know is all you would want from a Game of Thrones themed product.

I have only managed to use the lotion and the heart soap so far so I can only talk about them, but they were so good that I couldn’t wait to review the rest of the products before posting this. The heart soap first of all gets a 10/10 for being so incredibly detailed and flawless. Although, it does take a bit to later up, which is probably due to the shape, once you get it going you can get a really good lather going. It’s also perfect if you’re like me and want to just use it to recreate Game of Thrones scenes.

I’ve already discussed a bit about the order process, but I’ll just go into a bit more detail for those interested. So I ordered my crate on the 1st June, and the way Geeky Clean do their monthly subscription box is that you have a few days at the start of each month (can’t remember exactly how many sorry) where you can order the crate, and they are then delivered to you at the end of the month. So my box was dispatched on the 29th, and I think as far as I remember it arrived a few days after that.

The reason they don’t just have a ongoing subscription service is because each month as a different theme, and you just really might not be interested in a theme for one of the months. Their last theme for example was ‘Magical Girls’ (which, I am so gutted that I missed).

Overall, I definitely recommend their products for someone who likes bath stuff that is a bit different and like to support smaller, independent businesses that really put their heart and soul into what they do. Also, leave me a comment if you’d like me to do a post reviewing the rest of the crate once I’ve used it. I really want to try the sherbet especially, but I mostly take showers for speed, but  I will make the effort to have a bath soon if people are interested! I also haven’t used the dragon soap because it’s so pretty and I don’t want to ruin the pattern. If you want to see more hauls from this company let me know, as to be honest it just gives me an excuse to buy loads of their products.
